“Amma”, the oldest Chinese word to describe massage, is an ancient healing system dating back about 5,000 years to th eperiod of the Yellow
Emperor. The name Am-ma means “push-pull”.
AMMA Therapy, founded and developed by Tina Sohn, is an extremely specialized for of massage therapy that combines deep tissue manipulation with the application of pressure, friction and touch to specific points and channels on which they are found. These channels are pathways through which energy passes through the body called “meridians”. Rooted in the same fundamentals as Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine, Amma Therapy focuses on the balance and movement of energy within the body. These techniques aim to remove blockages and free the flow of Qi, thereby restoring, promoting and maintaining optimum health.
How Does AMMA Therapy work?
AMMA Therapy® is concerned with the balance and movement of life energy (Qi) in the human body. Whereas the acupuncturist will insert needles into these energy pathways to stimulate and move the energy and the herbalist will use appropriate herbal remedies to do the same, the Amma Therapist® relies primarily on the sensitivity and strength of the hands to manipulate and balance the life energy.
Knowledgeable in related approaches, such as moxibustion (the application of heat to acupuncture points), appropriate use of herbal medications, diet, and meditation, the Amma Therapist® is concerned with the flow and balance of energy in the pathways of Qi, commonly known as the channels, that form an energetic web throughout the body. The channels of Qi nourish and defend the body. As well, it is through these channels that harmful energies gain access to deeper regions of the body. The balanced and unobstructed flow of Qi through the channels is imperative for maintaining good health. AMMA Therapy® utilizes all the techniques of the major forms of therapeutic massage.
AMMA Therapy addresses problems from a multi-system, multi-directional point of view. The process of assessment uses both Western and Eastern knowledge and techniques, combining traditional Asian medical principles,(TCM), for assessing energy imbalances with a Western approach to organ dysfunction. A diagnosis is based on the Four Traditional Methods: looking, asking, touching, and smelling. This includes the assessment of every facet of the mindbody complex, including observation of the tongue; the taking of various pulses; palpation; and evaluation of diet, complexion, bowel movements, posture, emotions, vitality, personal likes and dislikes, smells, tastes, and sounds. Every sign and symptom reflects the internal state of the body and can be used in assessment, providing information about the psychological state of the patient as well as the prognosis of the disease or imbalance. Specific areas of the body are seen as a microcosm of the whole, revealing much about the entire organism. For a comprehensive assessment, the AMMA Therapist also uses information from available medical tests (blood, X-ray, MRI, etc.) and any medications being taken. Once energy imbalances and organ dysfunctions are diagnosed, the AMMA therapist’s hands and fingers can appropriately treat the body to remove blockages, free the flow of energy, and bring healing energy to problem areas.
History of AMMA Therapy:
AMMA Therapy was founded and developed by Tina Sohn, co-founder of the Wholistic Health Center. Tina Sohn was born into one of the “800 families” which constitute the ruling classes of Korea. The women in her family were masters of the ancient healing arts, while males were superior masters of the martial arts. Within the family, training in energy development and control began during childhood. Along with the legacy of physical and spiritual training, Tina sohn inherited a responsibility to the people she served. She began her training at age 4, studying hatha yoga-like exercises and esoteric energy development exercises. She was trained to become a champion long distance ocean endurance swimmer and by adoloescence had attained this status. Her final training in the mountains of Korea, was completed with her grandmother, an acupuncturist, herbalist and practitioner of AMMA.
Through a crippling accident when she spent 30 days in a coma and was given up for dead by western doctors in her native Korea, Tina Sohn evolved a heightened sensitivity to the physical condition of others and developed into a true Diagnostic sensitive- a woman of unmatched inner strength and power, who knew herself to be more than a material body.
Years later, under the guidance of her husband and teacher, Robert Sohn, Tina Sohn pursued her destiny as a diagnostic sensitive and healer. She integrated her knowledge of Oriental Medicine and Western Medicine with her hightened sensitivity- and created a bodywork therapy that is like no other. It was through her efforts that AMMA Therapy was brought to the Unites States and in conjunction with Robert Sohn, this healing art was introduced into the american Healthe Care system in the early 1970’s.
In 1976, Dr and Mrs Sohn co-founded the New Center which was to become the Wholistic Health Center to bring to Long Island, NY a fully integrated out-patient facility using natural and preventative approaches to provide quality Wholistic health care services. under the guidance of Tina Sohn, a group of students studied and trained in AMMA Therapy and Oriental Medicine. The Wholist Health Center became the NY College of Wholistic Health Education and Research, now called the NY College of Health Professions in Syosset, NY.
What is Wholistic Health?
Wholistic Health focuses on maintaing and restoring health before crises develop. When the body, mind and spirit are in a dynamic state of balance, one is Wholistically Healthy.
1. A human being is a living energy system, rather than an arangement of parts. Any disturbance in body, mind or spirit reflects a disturbance in the whole system.
2. Real health involves the whole person. Mind and body are integrated and inseparable.
3. Wholistic health treats the “whole” person-not just symptoms and disease.
4. Real health is not the absence of disease but a positive state of being.
5. Real health is acheived with treatment of couses rather than symptoms, using natural and preventative approaches to health.
6. In Wholism, all approaches to healthcare are valued and integrated. wherever possible, natural low-risk methods which mobilize the individual’s healing resources take precedence over drugs, surgery and other hazardous therapies.
7. Wholistic health recognizes the power of the body to heal the mind and the power of the mind to heal the body.
8. Each person has the responsibility for his or her own health and must be an active partcicipant in healing.
What is a Typical Session in AMMA Therapy?
An AMMA Therapy session usually lasts between 75 -90 minutes. During the massage-type treatment, you wear a “gown” or loose clothing and are treated on a massage table.
Before the treatment. the Therapist will go over your medical history, current complaints, symptoms, diet and exercise. All information is always confidential.
After your history is reviewed, the Therapist will feel your pulse, examine your tongue, then proceed to do the massage including the manipulation of specific points. An important part of the AMMA process is client education regarding diet and therapeutic exercises directed toward optimum health. AMMA Therapy also stresses client responsibility and cooperation in following through with the recomendations, an essential component of a successful therapy.
